Maka Ellis attended Sierra Vista High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he established himself as a prolific scorer. He graduated as the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,004 career points, ranking seventh in Nevada state history. Ellis also holds the Nevada Class 4A records for free throws made (492) and attempted (606). He earned All-Nevada honors twice and was named the Southwest League MVP in the 2016โ€“17 season. โ€‹
